In a sharply worded reaction issued on Wednesday, presidential aides argued that Obi’s latest political assurances were merely strategic statements aimed at gaining political advantage ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that Nigerians should be cautious about accepting such commitments at face value.
According to the Presidency, leadership credibility is built not only on campaign rhetoric but also on consistency, transparency, and political history.
Officials maintained that promises surrounding a proposed one-term presidency arrangement were insufficient to convince Nigerians, especially in a political environment where similar pledges have allegedly been abandoned after gaining power.
The Presidency further contended that Obi’s comments appeared designed to calm growing concerns among various political blocs and regional interests over zoning and power rotation ahead of the next election cycle.
However, government sources insisted that verbal assurances alone could not substitute for trust earned through long-standing political conduct.
