Former President Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly preparing to personally appear before a Federal High Court on Friday in connection with an ongoing legal suit challenging his eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election, multiple high-level political sources have disclosed.

The planned court appearance, according to insiders familiar with the development, is expected to mark a major turning point in the former president’s long-speculated political comeback, with indications that Jonathan may formally declare his intention to seek the presidency shortly after the proceedings.

Sources within key political circles revealed that consultations involving influential stakeholders, former governors, northern political leaders, youth groups, and members of the business community have intensified in recent weeks, fueling growing speculation that the former Nigerian leader has finally resolved to re-enter the nation’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The eligibility suit, which has attracted national attention, centers on constitutional interpretations regarding whether Jonathan can legally contest for another term after previously completing the tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua and subsequently serving a full elected term between 2011 and 2015.

Although Jonathan has yet to publicly confirm his presidential ambition, political observers say Friday’s expected court appearance could provide the clearest indication yet that the former president is ready to test the political waters once again.

Insiders disclosed that strategic meetings have been ongoing behind closed doors among several opposition figures and political blocs seeking a formidable candidate capable of challenging the ruling establishment in 2027.

Jonathan’s name, sources say, has consistently emerged as a consensus option due to his national appeal, international profile, and perceived moderate political disposition.

The former president has maintained a relatively quiet political posture since leaving office in 2015, largely dedicating his time to international diplomacy, peace mediation efforts across Africa, and democratic advocacy initiatives.

However, recent political developments and growing calls from supporters across different regions of the country are believed to have renewed pressure on him to return to active partisan politics.

Meanwhile, supporters of the former president have reportedly begun mobilization efforts across several states, with some political groups already urging him to “rescue the nation” from worsening economic and security challenges confronting the country.

Analysts believe that any formal declaration by Jonathan could significantly reshape the political calculations ahead of the 2027 presidential race, potentially altering alignments within both the ruling and opposition camps.

As of the time of filing this report, aides close to the former president declined to officially comment on the planned court appearance or the alleged presidential declaration. However, insiders insist that “major announcements” are expected in the coming days following the court proceedings.
