The Ogun State Government has accused former governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, of attacking the same political consensus arrangement that once played a significant role in advancing his own political career and influence within the state’s political structure.
The government, in a strongly worded reaction to recent comments credited to the former governor, said it was both surprising and disappointing that Daniel would openly criticise the consensus method despite previously benefitting from similar internal political agreements during his time in office and in subsequent political engagements.
According to the government, the consensus approach remains a legitimate democratic mechanism recognised within party politics and leadership selection processes across the country.
Officials maintained that such arrangements are often adopted to preserve party unity, reduce internal conflicts, and strengthen collective political interests ahead of major elections.
The administration argued that Daniel’s latest position appeared inconsistent with historical realities, noting that several political leaders, including the former governor himself, had emerged through negotiations, consultations, and consensus-building efforts endorsed by party stakeholders at different times.
Government sources further stressed that the current administration remains committed to transparent leadership and inclusive political participation, insisting that no individual should attempt to discredit a process that has long been accepted as part of democratic political culture in Nigeria.
The statement also warned against actions and comments capable of creating unnecessary divisions within the ruling political structure in Ogun State, urging political actors to place party stability and public interest above personal grievances or ambitions.
While reaffirming its confidence in the consensus model, the Ogun State Government maintained that party stakeholders and members retain the constitutional right to adopt any lawful internal mechanism considered appropriate for achieving unity and electoral success.
The development has continued to generate reactions within Ogun’s political space, with observers describing the exchange as a sign of growing political tension and realignments ahead of future political contests in the state.
