The political rivalry between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has continued to deepen ahead of the 2027 general elections, raising fresh concerns over the growing division within the political structure of Rivers State.

What initially appeared to be a disagreement over control of the state’s political machinery has now evolved into a full-scale power struggle, with both camps intensifying efforts to consolidate influence across key institutions, party structures, and grassroots networks.

Political observers say the prolonged face-off between the two leaders is already reshaping the political landscape in Rivers State, with loyalists on both sides openly engaging in supremacy battles over appointments, party leadership, and strategic alliances ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The crisis, which began shortly after Governor Fubara assumed office, has witnessed several dramatic twists, including tensions within the Rivers State House of Assembly, legal battles, and repeated attempts at reconciliation by prominent political stakeholders.

Despite interventions from party elders and national leaders, the relationship between both camps has remained strained, with neither side showing signs of backing down.

Insiders within the state’s political circle believe the rivalry may significantly influence the configuration of alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly regarding control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structure in Rivers State and the wider South-South region.

Supporters of Governor Fubara insist that the governor is determined to strengthen his independence and fully exercise the powers of his office without external interference, while allies of Wike maintain that the former governor remains a dominant political force whose influence in Rivers politics cannot be ignored.

Analysts warn that if unresolved, the lingering crisis could further polarize the state’s political environment and affect governance, party cohesion, and preparations for future elections. The development has also sparked nationwide attention, given the strategic importance of Rivers State in Nigeria’s political equation.

As 2027 draws closer, political watchers believe the battle for supremacy between Wike and Fubara may ultimately determine the future direction of Rivers politics and redefine power dynamics within the opposition camp.
