Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has weighed in on the evolving political landscape ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, asserting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains firmly positioned for re-election.

Sani, a prominent figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC), described the wave of support for former presidential candidate Peter Obi as largely driven by what he termed “tribal sentiments,” rather than a cohesive national political movement.

According to him, much of the enthusiasm surrounding Obi’s political base reflects emotional and regional affiliations, which, in his view, may not translate into a broad-based electoral victory at the national level.

He further characterized the momentum behind Obi as “political drama,” suggesting that while it has generated significant attention—particularly among younger voters and on social media—it lacks the structural depth and nationwide coalition required to secure power in a general election.

In contrast, Sani expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s political machinery and incumbency advantage, noting that the APC’s entrenched grassroots network, combined with the strategic positioning of the current administration, places the president in a strong position heading into the 2027 race.

He emphasized that electoral success in Nigeria depends not only on popularity but also on political alliances, institutional strength, and nationwide reach.

Sani’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions about opposition realignment and the possibility of a united front to challenge the APC in the next election cycle.

However, he maintained that without a unified and nationally inclusive strategy, opposition efforts may struggle to overcome the ruling party’s dominance.

The comments have since sparked reactions across political circles, with supporters and critics alike debating the role of ethnicity, voter behavior, and party structure in shaping Nigeria’s democratic future.
