Abuja Nigeria
Warning the party against proceeding with its planned national convention in defiance of an existing court order.
In a strongly worded statement, the electoral body emphasized that adherence to the rule of law remains a fundamental requirement for all registered political parties.
INEC made it clear that any action taken in violation of a valid judicial pronouncement could attract serious consequences, including the potential disqualification of the party from participating in future electoral processes.
According to the Commission, it is closely monitoring the situation and has taken note of reports indicating that the ADC may be considering moving forward with its convention despite the legal constraints imposed by the court.
INEC reiterated that such a move would not only undermine the authority of the judiciary but also constitute a breach of the regulatory framework governing political party activities in the country.
The Commission stressed that political parties are expected to operate within the bounds of the law at all times, particularly in matters relating to internal governance, leadership disputes,
and the organization of statutory meetings such as conventions and congresses.
It warned that failure to comply with legal directives could compel INEC to invoke its constitutional powers, which include sanctions that may affect the party’s legal standing.
Furthermore, INEC underscored the importance of maintaining order, transparency, and legitimacy in the political process. It noted that conventions serve as critical platforms for decision-making, leadership selection, and policy direction, and therefore must be conducted in strict compliance with both party constitutions and national laws.
The Commission advised the ADC leadership to exercise caution, respect the judicial process, and seek appropriate legal remedies if dissatisfied with the court’s ruling, rather than taking actions that could jeopardize the party’s future. It reiterated that the integrity of the electoral system depends heavily on the willingness of all stakeholders to uphold democratic principles and the rule of law.
In conclusion, INEC’s warning serves as a reminder that no political entity is above the law, and that compliance with court orders is not optional but mandatory.
The Commission urged the ADC to reconsider its position and act in a manner that preserves its credibility and eligibility within Nigeria’s democratic framework.
