Governor Oborevwori, Senator Okowa
Delta State Nigeria
Traditional rulers in Delta North Senatorial District have expressed strong support for the re-election of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in the 2027 general elections, while also calling on former Governor Senator Dr.
Ifeanyi Okowa to contest for a return to the Senate.
The endorsement was made during a high-level meeting of the Delta North Traditional Rulers’ Caucus held at the palace of His Royal Majesty, Obi Uche Irenuma II, the Obi and Paramount Ruler of Abavo Kingdom.
The gathering brought together influential monarchs across the district to review governance developments and discuss matters affecting their communities.
At the end of the meeting, the traditional rulers unanimously passed a vote of confidence on Governor Oborevwori, commending his administration for what they described as renewed inclusiveness, improved engagement with traditional institutions, and visible developmental strides across the state.
They noted that under the current administration, the relationship between the state government and the traditional institution has significantly improved, particularly through consistent consultation, recognition, and support for the Delta State Traditional Rulers’ Council.
According to them, this strengthened collaboration has contributed to enhanced peace, stability, and grassroots development across various communities in the state.
Speaking to journalists on behalf of the monarchs after the meeting, Obi Uche Irenuma II expressed profound appreciation to Governor Oborevwori for his continued support for traditional institutions.
He highlighted the governor’s sustained recognition of the critical role played by traditional rulers in maintaining order, promoting cultural values, and facilitating development at the grassroots level.
The monarch specifically praised the governor for the recent distribution of official vehicles to traditional rulers across Delta State, describing the gesture as both symbolic and practical.
He said the initiative reflects the administration’s understanding of the importance of empowering traditional institutions to effectively carry out their responsibilities within their domains.
According to him, Governor Oborevwori has demonstrated through deliberate policies and actions that his administration values traditional rulers as essential stakeholders in governance.
He further noted that the governor’s approach has fostered mutual respect and cooperation between government structures and indigenous leadership systems.
Beyond endorsing the governor’s second-term ambition, the traditional rulers also turned attention to the political future of Delta North by calling on former Governor Senator Dr.
Ifeanyi Okowa to contest for the senatorial seat of the district.
The monarchs explained that their appeal was informed by Okowa’s track record in public service, particularly during his tenure as governor of Delta State from 2015 to 2023.
They recalled that his administration recorded significant achievements in key sectors such as infrastructure development, healthcare delivery, education reform, and human capital development.
They further emphasized that Okowa’s tenure left a lasting legacy of visible transformation across the state, noting that several ongoing development projects and institutional frameworks were initiated under his leadership.
According to them, his administration laid a strong foundation for sustainable growth and improved governance in Delta State.
The traditional rulers also pointed out that Senator Okowa’s extensive experience in governance, combined with his deep understanding of the socio-economic needs of the people of Delta North, makes him uniquely qualified to represent the district effectively at the National Assembly.
They added that his previous experience as a legislator and executive governor places him in a strategic position to attract federal presence, development projects, and policy attention to the district if he returns to the Senate.
According to the monarchs, a return of Senator Okowa to the upper chamber of the National Assembly would significantly strengthen the voice of Delta North at the federal level.
They expressed confidence that his representation would further enhance development opportunities and ensure that the interests of the district are effectively articulated and protected in national policymaking.
The meeting concluded with renewed calls for unity among political stakeholders, traditional institutions, and community leaders in Delta North, with the monarchs stressing the importance of continuity, experience, and collaboration in sustaining development gains across the district.
