The Governor of Delta Sheriff Oborevwori has approved a significant upward review in the remuneration of medical doctors in Delta State,
in a strategic move aimed at strengthening the healthcare workforce and addressing the persistent challenge of brain drain within the sector.

This development was formally disclosed by the State Commissioner for Health,
Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, during a recent press briefing.

According to him, the newly approved salary structure introduces a ₦200,000 increase in the monthly earnings of entry-level doctors,
raising their salaries from ₦370,000 to ₦570,000. In addition, house officers will benefit from a ₦100,000 tax-free allowance under what has been designated as the “MORE Special Allowance.”

This adjustment will increase their monthly take-home pay from slightly above ₦250,000 to over ₦350,000.

Dr. Onojaeme explained that the governor’s decision was informed by the unsatisfactory turnout of qualified doctors in the state’s ongoing recruitment exercise, despite a substantial pool of over 6,000 applicants for more than 700 available healthcare positions.

He noted that while applications were high, the number of practicing doctors willing to take up roles remained relatively low, highlighting the urgent need for improved incentives.

The Commissioner expressed optimism that the enhanced compensation package will make positions within the Delta State healthcare system more competitive and appealing, thereby attracting skilled professionals and retaining existing personnel.

He emphasized that beyond financial incentives, the government remains committed to maintaining high standards in the recruitment process.

Furthermore, Dr. Onojaeme reassured the public and prospective applicants that the recruitment exercise will be conducted with utmost transparency and integrity. He stressed that the selection process will be strictly merit-based, with zero tolerance for inducement, favoritism, or any form of unethical practices.

This initiative reflects the state government’s broader commitment to improving healthcare delivery by investing in human capital, ensuring that residents have access to qualified and motivated medical professionals across all levels of care.
